Simple Daily Disciplines
As a home manager, there is always the next pressing thing that needs to be done. It is easy to start feeling overwhelmed like everything is spinning out of control faster than you can keep up. This definitely does not make you feel successful or in control. The secret that I found to make me feel like I was accomplishing things each and every day was to focus on completing one simple task daily until it became a habit. At the end of the day I could look back and see improvements.

Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day
Jim Rohn
Sounds too easy doesn’t it?
You are probably thinking, “Ha! You haven’t seen my house” or “You have no idea how crazy is gets at my house.” Well, that may be true but I would like to challenge you to pick one thing, just one thing that drives you crazy and makes you feel like a failure at the end of the day. It needs to be something simple like making the bed, getting dressed, emptying the sink. Just one thing and for the next week, get that one thing completed. Every.single.day.
Here are a few simple daily task suggestions to help you get started:
- Make Your Bed
- Shine your sink
- Get presentable
- Start a load of laundry
Make Your Bed
Who cares if the bed it made, right? Nobody sees that except you and your spouse. But let’s think about it as a discipline. What is the significance of making your bed?
Makes your room look neater.
Keeps you from crawling back into it!
It is an easy task that you can do quickly and check off your list. Set a timer or start the stop watch and see just how quickly this simple task can be accomplished.
Each time you step into the room you will feel confident that you started your day off right.
*It is important. Don’t take it too lightly. Think about it……those who enlist in the military have to make their bed every single day and it is inspected for perfection.
So your mother was right when she taught you to make your bed. 😉
Get Presentable
I’m not talking about Sunday morning “time for church” presentable. I mean someone is at the front door presentable. You don’t want to have to open the front door in your pj’s with bedhead and black raccoon eyes because you forgot to remove your makeup last night! Again, set a timers for 10-15mins and see how quickly you complete this discipline.
- Cleanse your face
- Brush your hair
- Brush your teeth
- Get dressed
Tell yourself that you DO have time to take care of yourself because self care is a must if you are going to care for your home and your family well.
Start A Load of Laundry
Piles and piles of dirty and/or clean clothes everywhere? Maybe this would be the place to start your daily discipline. One load. Even if you have enough darks or towels to do three loads. Pick your most important load to get done and do just one load to completion.
- Sort
- Wash
- Dry
- Fold as soon as the buzzer goes off
- Put it away, immediately. It is not complete until it is neatly put away.
Small task, simple accomplishments completed every day will make you feel successful. Quickly seeing results. Checking something off your list. These small task will become habits that you then can make part of your daily morning routine. Again, choose whatever bugs you the most. Soon you will be surprised at what you can get done in small timed intervals throughout the day just by starting with a plan or completing simple daily disciplines. The little things really do matter.
Simple disciplines do not need to be seen as mundane meaningless daily tasks but instead realize they are small successes that help you run your home well. This is your hub, the central location for those you love most. Your home is the place to relax, refresh and prepare to go out into the world with purpose, be what only each of you can be…ready to live life and love life!
Tell me, what daily task comes to mind for you?
